Six Officers on Trial For Freddie Grays Death FOUND NOT GUILTY US prosecutors have dropped all remaining charges against the police officers who were accused of murdering Freddie Gray, an unarmed African American. Last year, six police officers were charged with multiple crimes, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the killing of Gray, 25, who died of a broken neck and severe spinal injuries on April 19, a week after he was taken into custody. However, Maryland state’s attorney for Baltimore Marilyn Mosby declared Wednesday that none of the officers will be punished for Gray’s death, an incident that triggered Baltimore's worst riots in decades. “We could try this case 100 times just like it and we would still end up with the same result,” Mosb...

Among the revelations: • Investigators found that Gray was mortally injured in the van and not during his arrest, a Washington television station reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources. • Police told reporters they have learned of an additional stop the van made as it was traveling to a police precinct. • An officer involved in the arrest believes Gray was injured before being put into the vehicle, according to a relative who gave the officer's account to CNN. • A second prisoner, who was picked up after Gray, told investigators that he thought Gray "was intentionally trying to injure himself, according to The Washington Post. What happened to Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore man who suffered a severe spine injury and died one week after his arrest, has led to angry debate and protests nationwide. For the first time Thursday, Baltimore police walked with marchers and stopped traffic for them at intersections."*

“We could try this case 100 times just like it and we would still end up with the same result,” Mosby said in a statement, while calling for “substantive reforms to the current criminal justice system” that would allow such cases to be resolved. Mosby said she still believes Gray's death was a homicide. “We do not believe that Freddie Gray killed himself.” According to a post-mortem analysis, Gray sustained life-threatening injuries after being slammed into the wall of a police van during the ride while being handcuffed but not restrained with a seat-belt. Initially, prosecutors had charged Officer Garrett Miller of illegally arresting Gray. He was also deemed criminally negligent for failing to buckle Gray into a seat-belt and leaving him unattended after his injuries. The decision came after three of the six police officers were already cleared from all charges. Earlier this month, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams cleared officer Caesar Goodson of a second-degree "depraved heart" murder charge in the case, the most serious accusation sought against the six officers charged in the case. Prosecutors had accused Goodson of intentionally giving Gray a "rough ride" to the police station but Judge Williams said they had not proven that he "failed corruptly" in his job rather than just making a mistake. In May, officer Edward Nero was cleared of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct in office. Moreover, a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case of officer William Porter. During the officer’s trial, prosecutors said porter ignored Gray's requests for medical help and described the police van that was carrying him as a "coffin on wheels." The US police are widely accused of using excessive force against African-Americans. Several police killings of unarmed black men and women over the past years have sparked protests nationwide, giving rise to an activist movement called Black Lives Matter. The death of Freddie Gray has been ruled by the medical examiner's office as a homicide caused by severe trauma. State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, the chief prosecutor for Baltimore, announced this morning that her office has also found probable cause to pursue criminal charges in connection to the case. ABC News has confirmed that all six of the police officers are now in custody. Michael Davey, the attorney hired by one of the officers, spoke on behalf of all six saying “these officers will be vindicated because they have done nothing wrong.” “No officer injured Mr. Gray, caused harm to Mr. Gray, and [they] are truly saddened by his death,” Davey said during a news conference this afternoon with the police union. Mosby announced a series of charges now facing the six police officers involved in putting Gray in custody and transporting him in the police wagon on the morning of April 12. The charges vary for each individual, but include several counts of manslaughter, second-degree assault, misconduct in office, and false imprisonment among others. The most serious charge she listed was second-degree depraved heart murder, which only one officer faces. A warrant has been issued for the police officer's arrest, Mosby said. Gray, 25, was taken into police custody in Baltimore on April 12 and sustained a spinal injury during that time that required medical attention. He went into a coma several days later and died a week after his apprehension. Police have never said why they took him into custody in the first place, noting only that he ran from officers, and they have not publicly explained how Gray received the spinal injury. Mosby detailed the findings of her office's independent investigation into Gray's apprehension, and she detailed how officers repeatedly ignored Gray's pleas for help and that officers bound his arms behind his back and put his legs in clamps but did not secure him within the police wagon with a seat belt, which is a violation of Baltimore police policy. One of the biggest findings that Mosby announced was that the decision to take Gray into custody in the first place was unwarranted because the knife that he had is allowed under Baltimore laws. While the knife was able to fold, it was not a switchblade. Mosby urged calm in the wake of the charges, speaking directly to protesters at the end of her news conference. "I heard your call for 'no justice, no peace.' However your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of Freddie Gray," she said. In an open letter today before Mosby's news conference, the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police asked Mosby to appoint a Special Independent Prosecutor.
